AEA International School is located in Shekou, Shenzhen, with factories and sports towns on the edge of several interesting renovation projects. We were commissioned to transform a concrete structure factory into a 13,000 square meter international school.
There is a patio in the middle of the building. We use it to transform into a hub of the school and become a place for exhibitions and gatherings to promote communication between teachers and students. This patio is also at the heart of natural day lighting and ventilation, which unfolds a regenerative structural story, a sustainable school design. The corridor around the atrium forms a kaleidoscope-like geometry, which is better for daylight and sight to be brought into the surrounding classrooms. The well-shaped corridor combines several functional areas. Students from international schools not only study in the classroom, but also communicate and discuss in the corridor. The flexible partitions and furniture of the multi-functional classrooms next to them can be adjusted according to the requirements of teachers and students. This campus is a student-centered community where students receive comprehensive training and independent learning, no longer receiving knowledge in a traditional classroom.
